The Front Bottoms, 8 Tracks favourites and darlings of the folk punk scene took to a packed-out Leeds University stage to promote the triumph that is their newest album Back On Top. The tour represents a new and exciting frontier for the band, with vocalist and frontman Brian Sella looking out across the crowd and exclaiming “woah… there’s a lot of people here.”
Joined by the always enigmatic Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band the show kicked off in style, with a mix of upbeat folky lyrics and undeniably powerful guitars that seemed to draw equally from Neutral Milk Hotel and Nirvana. Given that Kevin himself didn’t stop moving the entire time he was on stage, the act proved a perfect choice for getting the crowd up and dancing.
The Front Bottoms set was a perfect mix of new material and old favourites, with the band even relenting to the crowd’s requests and giving a spontaneous performance of Swimming Pool. Though a few things may have been lost in translation (the famous “Yorkshire” chant had to be explained to them, as did the shouts for Brian to down his drink) some things are universal, and the surprise Cornet solos and bubble machines certainly seemed to fit the bill.
If you like bouncy guitars and that unmistakable underground vibe, this is definitely the tour for you, and luckily it’s only just begun.
